West of England Open Championships 2013

Clifton College, 26/27th October 2013

Another successful weekend was held here at the Clifton courts, writes organiser Simon Werkshagen, with no injuries to report, just the traditional late arrivals for many of the players!

Both the singles and doubles saw a very strong entry with no weak players, this lead to some very close and entertaining matches to watch. The highlight of the singles (apart from the final) being the semi-final match between Will Ellison and Dan Tristao, which ebbed and flowed throughout. Will looked in total control at 7:1 up in the first game, but Dan did his usual catch-up to nick the game 11-9, before taking the second by the same score.

Sunday morning saw the two finalists nearly being scratched for being 45 minutes late with an impatient audience waiting for their match. Once it was under way, Dan T won the first game fairly comfortably, but a strong second game performance from Dan G had us thinking we were to have a third game. In the end, though Dan T held on to take it 11-9 and secure the title.

In the doubles, the seedings went to form until the final where the singles finalists overcame last year’s winners Hammish and Will, putting to bed their embarrassment at the way they had performed in the previous year's final.

Special thanks to must go to new RFA President Bob Dolby for being around to help with the silverware and for my bottle of wine, as well as the combination of Tom Kiggel, Jim Hughes, James Toop and Marcus Bate for being the only match that made their allotted time early!!

I reserve my special thanks to Laura (soon to be Dean) for yet another cake for us all to eat. I wish you both the best of luck for your wedding next year from all of us at the West of England Club and keep baking those cakes!!
