WSSL 2012 WEEK THREE (26/27 June)

Sett points to Studs

The Studs maintained their 100% record with a 6-0 Badger-baiting on Tuesday night. Chief Stud Chapman was absent and rang the changes with Gareth Hoskins and Laurie Brock returning to the starting line-up and Oxford student Harriet Allan making her Superleague debut. The Honey Badger cake at the back of the court was a mere consolation as the Badgers line-up of Charlotta Cooley, Karen Hird, Mandie Barnes and ex-Stud Emily Scoones were unable to register on the scoreboard. Star Stud performer of the evening was undoubtedly Harriet, who raced into Golden Glove contention by nailing the ball in the hole a remarkable four times in her first ever Superleague rotation and followed that up by finishing with a three out of three record for the evening. The Badgers took their mauling philosophically and are looking to their crucial encounter with Fivercide next week.

Studs 6 – 0 Badgers

Academy creamed by ‘Cats

Academy Impresario Julian Black took charge of the baton to lead a team still smarting from a six-love schooling by the Desperados back in Week 1. Julian fielded a couple of “Old Masters” in Ian Mitchell and John Robinson alongside the youthful Ralph Morgan at #2, and together they fought tooth and claw in a whole series of close encounters with the Wildcats. Indeed, in a Superleague first, three of the six games went to 14-all before they were closed out by the cool cats from Westway. Kudos then to Tom Fletcher, Will Betts, and Dom and Lia Redmond for holding their nerve to claim maximum points in the rubber.

Fireside Fivercide

Phil Lyndon struggled once again to ignite his Fivercide team, and potential title-winning squad members, Dave Mew, Chris Austin and Carl Rennie have unfortunately yet to lay a glove on the 2012 tournament. Thanks to the camaraderie amongst the Superleague skippers, Westway Warlord Freddie Rowe stepped in to play for the stricken Fivercide to ensure that the match went ahead as scheduled. And In the first rotation we looked set for a spirited duel as Phil and Old-Citizen Alex Nice linked up superbly to upset Jurgen Hutter and Hugo Tobias 15-10, and Paul Kendall and Freddie battled well before losing 15-7 to Harry Turnbull and Simon Warren-Thomas. Unfortunately for Fivercide, various bits of Phil’s body started to fail him, and the ruthless Whores conceded only a further 17 points in securing an overall 5-1 victory. With an ailing Fivercide limping along, could the Badgers be scenting a coveted quarter-final slot? Don’t miss their sett-to on Independence Day next week!
