WSSL 2012 WEEK FOUR (3/4 July)

Studs deflate Warriors

This was Superleague action at its finest - two well-matched teams battling it out for top spot in Conference A. Warrior Whizz, Freddie Rowe, wielded his axe over the fit and in-form Redmond sisters to field his strongest possible team against a Studs line-up with a “long-looking tail”. That anyway was WSSL Ref Ryan Perrie’s opinion as he boldly predicted a “4-2 or 5-1 win for the Warriors”. For much of the match that verdict looked just about right. The Warriors quartet of Pete Cohen, Tom Fletcher, Will Betts and James Hammond won the first two games and were at level pegging most of the way through Rotation 2, but inspired by the tenacious Laurie Brock at 1 and “Boomer” Hindle at 2, the Studs fought back to bring the rubber all square at 2-2. The Studs were bucking now, they had reeled the Warriors in and weren’t about to let them off the hook. Even Club veterans Justin Shaw and Spencer Chapman found renewed vigour and the prairie unit fairly galloped through their games in Rotation 3, winning them to 8 and 9. The tail had wagged.

Whores outgunned

Milky-bar kid Ant Theodossi knows he can rustle up the strongest team in the Superleague. Indeed his stricken partner, WSSL MVP 2011, Ryan Perrie, has yet to even make it into the team during the 2012 regular season. And ‘dossi rolled the dice once again for this match-up against Ed Hewens, Harry Turnbull, Jurgen Hutter and Johnny Saunders. Restricting Perrie to ball boy duties, he blooded Alex Rattan and Chris Debonnaire alongside himself and fellow 2011 Superleague winner, Andrew Joyce. The first two games were a terrific spectacle, both close to an hour in duration, and both, crucially, going the Desperados way to 13 and 12. The Whores blasted back with a 15-3 win for Hewens and Saunders against Rattan and Joyce, but Captain Ant showed his class to nurse youngster Debonnaire through a tough encounter (15-13) with Turnbull and Hutter. Theodossi and Joyce then had just enough ammo to outgun Hewens and Turnbull in the top rubber of the match 15-14, before Hutter and Saunders deservedly scored a second point for the Windsor boys.

Fivercide rain on Badger Parade

Phil Lyndon has struggled manfully to keep Fivercide in the running for Superleague honours this year. Although desperate to rotate himself out of the team for some much needed r & r, Phil started again, but was buoyed by the prospect of fielding Aldenham Ace, Chris Austin in the pivotal role at #1. Alex Nice was next on the team sheet, but then Lyndon’s ink ran dry and, not for want of trying, Fivercide couldn’t produce Fouraside. Thankfully, and reprising a role he had carried out for the Academy in Week 3, the erstwhile umpire, Ryan Perrie, stepped in to ensure the tie could be played. Karen Hird knew then before the game started that her fledgling Badger team had three points in the bag, as All-Pro Perrie’s points would not count in the final reckoning. Karen also knew that an additional point might just be enough to nick knock-out honours for her team. That point was not forthcoming in the first two rotations despite the best efforts of Karen and Sarah Frost and then Charlotta Cooley and Sarah again. On to the third rotation, and a final chance for Ipswichian Frost and her partner Eli Hullis to enter Badger folklore and bash the boys. It wasn’t to be. Lyndon and Nice were always doing enough before easing away to a 15-7 victory. In the words of Harry Hill, “the Badger Parade has been cancelled”.
