WSSL 2012 WEEK FIVE (10/11 July)

Warriors scalp Cooley

In what would be a dress rehearsal for their quarter final encounter next week, the Warriors now look to have the Indian sign on the Whores. Certainly Chief Freddie Rowe was triumphant on hearing the news that Kinnaird champ Seb Cooley’s team had been restricted to just two points, claiming “We’ve taken the scalp we wanted” after Cooley and Jurgen Hutter lost to 11 in their first rotation encounter with Pete Cohen and Will Betts. Whores wunderkind Cooley recovered his composure to win his next two matches alongside Karl Wagner and Nick Bunyan, but the brave Warriors won everything else, including a particularly impressive victory for Will Betts and James Hammond over Hutter and Wagner in Game 6. Roll on the rematch!!

Reynolds finally mastered

Superleague 2012 has been attracting a whole host of marquee names onto the Westway courts, and John Reynolds was the latest to pitch up for this, his overdue seasonal debut. Rightly lauded as the Grand Master of the sport, Reynolds, a record 11-time Kinnaird winner, now had the task of schooling team mates Ralph Morgan, Ian Mitchell and Daniel Arwas to their first points of the season. Paired with Mitchell in Rotation 1, Reynolds was able to shrug off the ring rust as they sneaked home 15-13 against Ed Hewens and Simon Warren-Thomas. In the parallel game, Morgan and Arwas excelled in taking 11 points off birthday celebrant Hugo Tobias and partner Sam Basu. The 2nd rotation saw some vintage fives from Reynolds as he dominated proceedings on top step all the while encouraging schoolboy Arwas to display a nice array of shots from the back court. They were convincing winners, 15-8, over Tobias and Warren-Thomas. On to the top match then, with Reynolds and Morgan opposed by Westway specialist Ed Hewens and thirty-something Tobias. The Academy started brightly enough, but lack of hard conditioning took its toll on their talisman, and Hewens and Tobias emerged as cosy winners. Accurate Fives from Warren-Thomas and Basu in the second court extended the Whores advantage to 4-2 overall.

Five Studs give one but take six off Fivercide

So keen are the Studs for WSSL match practice, they turned up last Wednesday with a man to spare! Fortunately for them, Fivercide were firing on three cylinders and gratefully accepted the services of Gareth Hoskins, slotting him in at the top of Phil Lyndon’s pecking order. Hoskins teamed up with Lyndon in the first rotation against Laurie Brock and Rob Wilson. And it was the Studs, barely out of short trousers, who won a well-contested match against their more experienced rivals 15-9. Aldenham Ace, Chris Austin and Old Citizen Alex Nice completed the Fivercide line-up, as they met “Boomer” Hindle and Spencer Chapman on the second court. Although more closely matched in aggregate age, thanks to the presence of the Club Patron, it was the Studs who took advantage of a fast start to show a clean pair of heels to their rivals. The second rotation saw fairly routine wins for the Studs, but the top match of the rubber in Rotation 3 produced a really good contest between Hoskins and his North Oxford teammate Austin, against Brock and Hindle. Quality play all round took the scores level at nine apiece, before the tenacity and power of the Studs proved just too much for the more mature Fivercide pair. Rob Wilson showcased his talent once again in the 6th match to complete the Studwash.
