The Prep School Fives was played at Eton with kind permission of the Head Master on Monday 11th March. It was one of the coldest days in recent years but there were some excellent matches during the tournament.
The quarter finals were made up of four Highgate pairs joined by the first pairs of Belmont, Ludgrove, Sunningdale and Summer Fields. The top two Highgate pairs knocked out their 3rd and 4th pairs reasonably comfortably whilst Belmont 1 beat a young Ludgrove pair convincingly. The first pairs of Sunningdale and Summer Fields locked horns again; they had met twice earlier in the season with honours more or less even and spectators realised that this would be a close encounter. In the end the experience of Thistlethwayte for Summer Fields just edged the match in their favour winning 12-10 in the third game. The semi-finals were rather one-sided with neither Belmont or Summer Fields able to return enough cuts.
The final between Highgate’s top two pairs was as good a final as has been seen at this level for some time. The length of rally, quality of returning and all round shot making was excellent to watch. In the end Tomasson and Randall prevailed 12-9 in the third game. This was Tomasson’s third consecutive win and he stands alone as the only three time winner in the history of the competition. He is an excellent prospect for Highgate in the future. Joe Porter (Director of Sport at Summer Fields) kindly presented the prizes.
