Midlands Schools' Spring Festival

Mark Yates reports:

A sunny morning on Sunday 3rd March saw 31 pairs from 5 schools meet at Shrewsbury School for a festival of Fives.  With players of differing ages, it was decided to play across 5 categories in order to provide players with as much match experience as possible. The winners of each category were:

Senior Boys                              Wolverhampton 1

Senior Girls                              Wolverhampton 1

Intermediate Boys                     R/rydal Penrhos 2

Junior Boys                               King Edwards School, Birmingham 1

Junior Girls                               R/rydal Penrhos 1

Wrekin College: The Spring festival offered the young Wrekin College team an opportunity to get some valuable competitive experience.  Elliot Evlyn-Bufton & Henry Davies performed admirably on debut, winning their first match against Wolverhampton G.S. and running some more experienced KES pairs close in subsequent games.  Livvy Yeadon, Charlotte Nicol and Oliva Nicol improved throughout the day accumulating more points each time they played.  Many thanks to all the Wrekin parents for supporting and transporting the team.

R/rydal Penrhos dominated the intermediate boys’ competition with their top two pairs meeting in the final.  The young R/rydal boys also gained great experience from competing with players of a similar age.  The R/rydal girls played very well in the junior girls section and in a spirit that did them credit.  We look forward to seeing the R/rydal Penrhos team at the N/national Schools Championships in a few weeks’ time.

King Edwards School, Birmingham proved to have a wealth of talent with their Junior boys, both at U13 and U12 ages.  The Junior Boys competition saw an all KES final that went to 3 sets.  The Intermediate and Senior boys had mixed fortunes but all gained more time on court and competitive experience.  Many thanks to the evergreen Mr Worthington for bringing the team along and running the Junior tournament.

Wolverhampton G.S. used the festival as an opportunity to blood some recent new comers to the game with some match experience.  Aaron Dhaliwal, Conor Jordan, Haris Malik and Gurkshan Beghal all benefitted from time on court and improved throughout the day.  At Intermediate Level, Silas Lawrence and Tom Aston battled away in some long and close matches which will stand them in good stead for the N/national Championships.  Tejas Netke and Beth Parlane dominated the Senior girls’ competition and are developing into a useful partnership.  At senior level Ben Hart and Tom Weston enjoyed success with straight sets wins over their opposition.

Shrewsbury School demonstrated their strength in depth, even with many of their senior boys and girls playing at Eton, they were still able to turnout a more than competitive team.  It was particularly pleasing to see so many U17 girls playing who are new to the game this season.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank Seb Cooley and Andy Barnard for organising the Shrewsbury team and providing the facilities to allow the Spring festival to happen.
