Paul Bowden reports:
On Tuesday 26th January 2016 44 girls from seven different schools gathered for the third Girls’ Fives Festival at Berkhamsted. Oakham and Aldenham were not represented this year but, in addition to Berkhamsted, Shrewsbury and Stowe, there were girls from St Olave’s, Charterhouse, Ipswich and St Bartholomew’s. The seven school target set last year was met: perhaps we can aim for nine next time!
It was particularly pleasing to note the rising standards. Whilst there was not an outstanding pair like last year’s top pair from Shrewsbury, the overall standard was considerably higher and most matches were keenly contested.
The girls all seemed to greatly enjoy the experience of playing games against a variety of opponents from different schools. On such an afternoon, there are not winners and losers, but just winners. Even though the weather was fairly unpleasant and the courts became wet, the spirits were not dampened. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for the girls and those watching.
Thanks are due to all those who brought the girls from far and wide and in particular to Anthony Theodossi for once again organising such a splendid afternoon. He is proposing another Festival in the Summer Term when we hope that the weather will be rather more agreeable. The date will be published soon so please try to keep it free.
If any other Schools would be able to host a similar event next season, please let me know and let’s get a date in the diary.
Do let me or Mandie Barnes have any ideas you may have for promoting Fives for girls.
