Berkhamsted 1 continued their perfect start to life in Division 1 with a second successive 3-0 win at the weekend, this time against defending champions Olavians 2. This was a different looking Olavian outift to the one that won the league last year, but a strong one nonetheless, with Peter Cohen leading the line with support from the up and coming Billy Dennis and Luke Stradwick, recent Oxford half-blues Will Betts and Balrik Kailey and the ever reliable Charlotta Cooley. The Berkhamsted team marshalled their resources carefully in their efforts to win all three pairs and Doug Foster got the better of fellow Lancing Old Boy Will Betts at first pair, Jeremy O'Neill providing the support to see off the challenge of Betts and Cohen in three close games. Anthony Theodossi and Charles Holroyd also had their work cut out at second pair against Stradwick and Kailey: they squeezed through the first game 15-13 and the second 12-9 before being pegged back, as the Olavians clinched the third 12-10. The fourth was equally tense but the Berkhamsted pair just had enough to edge it 12-9 to take the match 3-1, home advantage possibly proving crucial in the end. George Campbell at third pair was partnering inexperienced youngster Nick Woof, but despite a scare in the second game, George had too much class for the Dennis/Cooley combination and helped Berkhamsted maintain their 100% record, laying out their title credentials in the process, even at this early stage of the season.
