2004 Prep Schools' Tournament

Gerald Barber reports:

It was particularly sad that we did not have entries from Berkhamsted this year, however 32 keen and enthusiastic pairs took part in the Prep Schools Competition at Harrow. The weather was testing but failed to hamper the enthusiasm of the competitors.

Very quickly it emerged that Highgate were powerful once again and all the Highgate pairs prospered strongly in the opening rounds. The first pair from Ludgrove looked menacing and could mount a formidable challenge in the knockout stages.

As the day wore on Highgate proved all conquering. In the semi-finals Highgate I easily over came Ludgrove II while Highgate II had a marathon, needle battle with Ludgrove I.

The aggressiveness of the Highgate pair was impressive and although they were 10-12 down in the third game, they emerged as victors. There is a thin line between tight competitiveness and fairness. The Highgate pair nearly overstepped the mark on occasions and this is to be noted. Full credit though must be given to them from their total commitment and focus. They emerged as winners by 14 -12 in the 3rd game.

The final was an all Highgate affair and yet was played in a highly competitive spirit. After some long rallies in the early stages Highgate I ultimately emerged as worthy champions. The positional play and accuracy of both Little and Marks was much to be admired.

The Jeremy Marston plate was won by Highgate IV who comfortably overcame a tigerish Ludgrove pair. This game was played with aggression and determination but was always contested fairly. Congratulations to Highgate for sweeping the board.

Next year 2005, we move back to Eton on Thursday 16th March. I very much hope all schools will participate and continue to support this most enjoyable day's fives.
